DAY 1 Recap
The vibrant city of Berlin played host to the Frontiers Health 2024 global conference edition, gathering industry leaders, innovators, and stakeholders gathered to explore cutting-edge advancements and share insights that will define the future of healthcare. Kicking off the event, we continued our tradition of amplifying patient voices with a powerful keynote from Dave deBronkart, a.k.a. e-Patient Dave. His talk, The Dawn of Patient Autonomy, delved into how AI is revolutionizing patient empowerment, granting individuals unprecedented control over their health decisions. Through powerful real-life examples, Dave showcased AI’s potential to transform patient-centered care and promote healthcare equity.
Nadeem Sarwar then took the stage to highlight Novo Nordisk’s Transformational Prevention Unit. His keynote, Stopping People from Becoming Patients, addressed the need for a crucial shift from disease-care to health-care, stimulating lively discussions on the future of preventive medicine and the importance of predicting and preventing obesity and its cascading effects.
The Driving Health Equity Impact through Innovation panel, led by Kristin Milburn (EVERSANA), featured Tony Estrella (World Economic Forum), David Rabinowitz (Deloitte Consulting), and Peter Speyer (Novartis Foundation). They shared inspiring stories of community-driven efforts transforming health outcomes, underscoring the pivotal role of innovation in advancing equity.
The future of artificial intelligence in healthcare was discussed in an engaging fireside chat, between Bart de Witte (HIPPO AI Foundation) and Jakob Uszkoreit (Inceptive). As part of their discussion, they outlined how open-source models and data communities are transforming drug discovery and healthcare outcomes, and emphasized the importance of making advanced medical technologies accessible and useful to the general public.
David Benshoof Klein’s keynote, The Intersection of Medication and Software, explored the FDA’s guidance on Prescription Drug Use-Related Software (PDURS). As CEO & Founder of Click Therapeutics, he illustrated how digital-medication integration is set to enhance patient outcomes and reshape future business models.
In the panel discussion Successfully Navigating Global Commercialization, led by Mike Ryan (EVERSANA), industry experts Bhavesh Ashar (SpringWorks Therapeutics), Marc Brumagne (Gilead), and Sharon Cunningham (Shorla Oncology) shared their perspectives on overcoming the complexities of global market entry. They emphasized the impact of innovative, integrated commercialization models in enhancing brand strength, broadening patient access, and driving positive health outcomes.
Another highlight was the presentation by Felix Thielmann, Mirko Bass, and Martin Jonathan Gavrysh, on DB Medibus—a pioneering mobile healthcare clinic reaching underserved populations. Their narrative offered a compelling look at how DB Medibus addresses healthcare inequities, demonstrating the transformative role mobile solutions can play in extending quality care.
The conversation on future healthcare solutions continued with the Future of Telehealth panel, guided by moderator Aditi U. Joshi from Telehealth.org. Experts Joseph Cafazzo (Centre for Digital Therapeutics, University Health Network), Jhonatan Bringas Dimitriades (Lapsi Health), Sue Thomas (Google Health), and Maximilian von Waldenfels (Caspar Health) examined the integration of telehealth with cutting-edge technologies like remote patient monitoring (RPM), artificial intelligence, and virtual reality. They offered practical insights on how these tools are propelling precision medicine forward and reshaping patient care.
Day 1’s plenary concluded with the dynamic Consumers Rule panel, moderated by Marc Sluijs (digitalhealth.network). Visionaries Hamish Grierson (Thriva), Raghav Gupta (Aktiia), David Meinertz (ZAVA), Sokratis Papafloratos (Numan), and Rhiannon White (Clue) explored the rise of consumer-driven business models in digital health, sharing valuable strategies for scaling and vertical integration. Their discussion underscored how consumer empowerment is rapidly changing the healthcare landscape. Across all these panels, conversations reflected an unwavering commitment to advancing health innovation, spotlighting patient empowerment, preventive care, and breakthrough telehealth solutions. The insights shared reaffirmed our collective drive toward a healthcare revolution on the horizon.
DAY 2 Recap
The energy and insights continued into Day 2 of Frontiers Health, where attendees were immersed in discussions on breakthrough topics like systematized drug repurposing, the convergence of digital therapeutics and pharmaceuticals, and the game-changing impact of AI in healthcare. Each session underscored the immense progress being made and the transformative potential of these innovations for the future of health.
The day kicked off with Grant Mitchell of Every Cure whose keynote, From Serendipity to Systemized Drug Repurposing, captivated the audience. He unpacked the transformative potential in re-envisioning FDA-approved drugs through systematic approaches, showcasing how these efforts can turn existing medications into new, life-saving treatments.
A standout session, Creating Value in Digital Health, moderated by Roberto Ascione, Chairman of the conference and President Health Innovation at EVERSANA, and Min-Sung Sean Kim (Carlsquare) brought together leaders across the health and investment sectors. The session, featuring Boris Bernstein (Water Street Healthcare Partners), Caspar Graf Stauffenberg (Carlsquare), Ali Hasan (Insurance Executive), Christoph Massner (Early Bird Venture Capital), and Tamara Orlova (Flo Health) dove deep into the principles of business models, current funding climates, and the role of strategic partnerships, mergers, and acquisitions in driving impact across digital health.
In a powerful conversation moderated by Marc Sluijs (digitalhealth.network), industry pioneers David Benshoof Klein (Click Therapeutics) and Hakim Yadi (Closed Loop Medicine) discussed how personalized drug-digital combinations are reshaping healthcare. By merging pharmaceuticals with digital therapies, these leaders are crafting innovative treatments that promise enhanced patient outcomes and access to tailored care.
During the Health Scoring Journey fireside chat, with Peter Ohnemus (dacadoo) and Gary Monk (Gary Monk Digital Consulting) examined the shift from early digital health tools to the hyper-personalized, outcome-oriented services that define today’s landscape. Peter shared his vision for the coming years, offering a glimpse of how digital health will evolve to meet growing demands for personalized care.
The Patient Centric 3.0 panel, moderated by Scott Snyder (EVERSANA), showcased experts Davide Bottalico (Pfizer), Brandon Drew (UCB), and Malin Johansson (Novo Nordisk). They discussed how digital solutions like telehealth, advanced analytics, and AI are driving a patient-centered transformation, underscoring the impact of these tools in tailoring care to individual needs.
In his keynote on AI in Digital Health, Anand Iyer highlighted Welldoc's pioneering use of AI to support regulated, data-driven digital solutions. He discussed how AI is fueling precision medicine and enabling new levels of personalized clinical care while emphasizing the importance of ethical standards to ensure safe, reliable applications of AI in healthcare.
At the Scaling Health Innovations Systemically keynote, the Digital Health Policy Summit took center stage. Alberta Spreafico (EVERSANA) highlighted the critical need for bridging policy and practice, focusing on how alignment in these areas can accelerate the adoption and scaling of innovative health solutions worldwide.
In a keynote on the Middle East Outlook on Innovation and Digital Health Yacine Hadjiat explored Dubai Health’s groundbreaking initiatives and shared insights into the region’s strategic vision for the future of healthcare. His talk highlighted the region's rapid progress and ambitious goals in advancing digital health.
Closing out the day, the Digitally Augmented Therapies panel, moderated by Megan Coder (DiMe), brought together voices from across the digital health landscape, including Marcus Bates (Aptar Digital Health), Eugene Borukhovich (YourCoach Health), Suhas Krishna (BMS), Mithun Ratnakumar (Gerresheimer), and Ervin Ukaj (Newel Health). They explored the integration of digital therapies within existing healthcare structures and discussed the practicalities of introducing these therapies to market, focusing on both the challenges and the significant potential to improve patient outcomes.
